Layouts Explained

Terminology

  • Layout — a reusable visual template used by one or more Information Displays.
  • Canvas — the design area whose width and height represent the player output.
  • Element — a text, text box, image, video or direction item placed on the canvas.
  • Layer — an element's entry in the stacking order. Higher layers appear in front of lower layers.
  • Group — multiple elements treated as a unit for moving, duplicating or deleting.
  • Token — a named placeholder in layout content. An Information Display supplies its value.
  • Destination index — a numbered direction slot that an Information Display maps to a Wayfinder destination.

What is a Layout?

A Layout defines the size, positioning and appearance of information content. It separates visual design from the values supplied by an Information Display, allowing one design to be reused.

The layout editor supports text, text boxes, images, videos and direction elements, along with selection, grouping, layers, grid snapping, zoom controls and undo/redo. Layouts can also be imported from or exported to XML.

The Layouts list

Open Layouts from the navigation.

The table shows:

  • Name — the layout name. This column can be sorted.
  • Project — shown when viewing records across all projects.
  • Description — the optional description.
  • Information Displays — displays that currently use the layout.
  • Operations — Edit and Delete.

Actions

  • New Layout — opens the visual layout editor.
  • Edit — opens the layout and all its layers in the editor.
  • Delete — asks for confirmation, then deletes an unused layout.

Deletion is blocked when any Information Display uses the layout. Reassign or delete those displays first. The Information Displays column shows the records that must be handled.
